Ciudad Guayana, formerly Santo Tomé de Guayana, city and industrial port, northeastern Venezuela, in Bolívar State at the confluence of the Caroní and Orinoco rivers in the Guiana Highlands. Founded by the state assembly in 1961 in an area rich in natural resources, the city became a major development area, with a steel complex, two aluminum plants, a tractor factory, bauxite and gold mining, a timber reserve, and the Guri hydroelectric project.
