Mercedes, city, southwestern Uruguay, capital of Soriano Department, on the Negro River, near its mouth on the Uruguay River. The city, which has road, rail, and air links to the capital, is a river port and trade center for the cattle, sheep, grains, and flax raised in the area. Industries include grain processing, linseed-oil milling, and paper milling, and the wool market is of great importance. A yachting center and health resort, the city also has a well-known musical society, an extensive rose garden, and parks along the river.
