Huancayo, city in central Peru, capital of Junín Department, in the eastern Andes Mountains, at an elevation of about 3350 m (about 11,000 ft). Located in a fertile grain-growing basin of the Mantaro Valley, Huancayo is a major commercial and transportation center. The city is known for its weekly fairs, where Native Americans from the surrounding areas sell food and handicrafts. It is the site of a cathedral and the National University of Central Peru (1962).
