Encarnación, city in southeastern Paraguay, capital of Itapúa Department, on the Paraná, at the border with Argentina. It is a major river port and a trade center for timber, cattle, hides, tobacco, corn, rice, and yerba maté. Industries include sawmilling, tanning, cotton ginning, and rice, corn, and maté milling. The city is the southern road and rail terminus of Paraguay. Founded as the mission of Itapúa by the Jesuits in 1632, the city became important when the Central Paraguayan Railway was constructed in 1854. Encarnación experienced rapid growth in the 1980s and early 1990s, culminating in the joint Paraguayan—Argentinian Yacyretá Dam project in December 1994.
