Concepción, city in central Paraguay, capital of Concepción Department, on the Paraguay River. The commercial center of northern Paraguay, it serves as a free port for southwestern Brazil, with which it is connected by road. A railroad links it with the nearby cattle-raising and lumbering town of Horqueta. Industries in Concepción include sawmills, flour mills, sugar refineries, and tanneries. An extensive trade in lumber, livestock, yerba maté, and québracho (a source of tannin, used to tan leather) is carried on. Founded in 1773, the city is sometimes called Villa Concepción.
