Temuco, city in southern Chile, capital of Cautín Province, on the Cautín River. Commercial activities revolve around agricultural products, which include oats, wheat, barley, timber, and apples. The ChileanAraucanian- agreement ending the Indian wars was signed on a nearby hill in 1881. The city was founded in the same year. Population (1998) 289,673.
