Rancagua, city in central Chile, capital of O'Higgins Region and of Rancagua Department. It is a trade and processing center for a large agricultural area and a commercial center for the El Teniente copper-mining area. In 1814 the Spanish defeated Chilean revolutionary forces under Bernardo O'Higgins in a battle fought in the streets of Rancagua.
