Arica, city in northern Chile, in Tarapacá Region, on the Pacific Ocean. It is a major seaport and transportation center for northern Chile, Bolivia, and the adjacent Tacna region of Peru. The Pan-American Highway passes through the city, which is also served by an international airport. Copper, tin, sulfur, and citrus fruit are major exports. The city was founded in 1570 as San Marcos de Arica. It was a seaport of Peru until 1880, when it was occupied by Chile during the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). Chilean control, recognized in the Treaty of Ancón (1883), was confirmed in 1929 by an agreement resolving the long-standing Tacna-Arica Dispute.
