Sorocaba, city in southern Brazil, in São Paulo State, on the Sorocaba River. A road hub on the Sorocaba Railroad, it lies in an area in which grains, fruits, coffee, sugar, timber, and minerals are produced, and it is an important cattle market and cotton-growing center. Industries include cotton and silk spinning and weaving, distilling, oil milling, fruit packing, printing, and the manufacture of wines, cement, fertilizer, hats, shoes, and soap. Rail yards are in the city, and nearby are hydroelectric plants.
