São Gonçalo, city in southeastern Brazil. It is a northeastern suburb of Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro State, situated near the eastern shore of Guanabara Bay. Among its principal manufactures are chemicals and metal products. The city is linked by railroad with Niterói on the coast and with inland points. Citrus fruits are grown in the region. Population (1996 estimate) 833,379.
