Maceió, city in eastern Brazil, capital of Alagoas State, a seaport on the Atlantic Ocean. The city serves as the processing and shipping center for the surrounding agricultural region in which cotton, sugarcane, and tobacco are produced. In Maceió are distilleries, textile mills, and sugar refineries. Population (1996 estimate) 723,230.
