Sucre, city in southern Bolivia, the country's legal (although nominal) national capital. Sucre is southeast of La Paz, the national administrative center. Situated more than 2591 m (8500 ft) above sea level, the city is a marketing and food-processing center for the surrounding agricultural region, in which fruit and wheat are grown. In Sucre are oil refineries and plants producing cement, shoes, and tobacco products. The supreme court is located in the city, which is also the site of San Francisco Xavier University (1624), one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in South America. Founded as Chuquisaca in 1538, the city received its present name in 1840, in honor of the first Bolivian president, Antonio José de Sucre. In 1809 Sucre became one of the first cities in South America to revolt against Spanish rule.
