Santa Fe, city in northeastern Argentina, capital of Santa Fe Province, near the junction of the Paraná and Salado rivers, opposite the city of Paraná. The city is connected by canal with the port of Colastiné on the Río Paraná. Santa Fe is the commercial and transportation center for a rich agricultural area that produces grain, vegetable oils, and meats. The city is the seat of the Catholic University of Santa Fe (1959), several museums, and a number of buildings erected during colonial times. Santa Fe was founded nearby in 1573 and was moved to the present site in 1653.
