Salamaua, small settlement in Papua New Guinea, located on the northeast coast of New Guinea, on the western shore of Huon Gulf. Salamaua is built on a tiny peninsula, partly enclosing a harbor, with rugged mountains rising inland. Salamaua fell to the Japanese in March 1942.
