Napier, city in northeastern New Zealand, on eastern North Island. Located in Hawke's Bay Region, Napier is a port on Hawke's Bay. It is an important manufacturing and fishing center and serves as an exporting point for wool, processed meat, and dairy products. The modern port was built in the 1930s to replace the old natural harbor that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931. An Anglican cathedral is here. The community, laid out in 1856, is named for Sir Charles Napier, a British official in India.
