Perth, capital city of Western Australia, south-western Australia located at the foot of Mount Eliza and on the banks of the River Swan, 16 km (10 mi) from its mouth, overlooking the broad reaches of the stretch known as Perth Water. Perth is Australia's most remote state capital and its fourth-largest city, having overtaken Adelaide in the late 1980s. It was named in honour of Sir George Murray, Secretary of State for the Colonies at the time of its founding in 1829, who was Member of Parliament for Perth, Scotland.
