Shepparton, city in Victoria, Australia. It is 182 km (113 mi) north of Melbourne. Shepparton is one of the largest cities in Victoria and is a service and commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural lands of the Goulburn Valley. Local industry is based largely on the produce of the region, notably fruits such as apricots, peaches, pears, and grapes. The fruit cannery in Shepparton is the largest in the Southern hemisphere. The city began as a wool port on the Murray River, but the introduction of irrigation led to the development of local orchards and farms after the 1880s.
