Hamilton, city in Victoria, Australia. Hamilton lies on the Grange Burn River and is the main service and commercial centre of the prosperous Western District of Victoria. The town's industries process timber, dairy produce, food, and wool; the last is easily the most important and Hamilton claims to be the "Wool Capital of the World". Founded in the 1850s around a coaching inn, the settlement became a town in 1928, growing into a city by 1949. The City of Hamilton Art Gallery is one of the most notable features of the city, with an impressive international collection.
