Bendigo, town in south-eastern Australia, in the state of Victoria. Formerly called Sandhurst, Bendigo is about 120 km (75 mi) north of Melbourne, and is a commercial and industrial town situated in a productive farming and stockbreeding region. Manufactured goods include processed food, clothing, ceramics, iron, and armaments. Bendigo is also the site of one campus of La Trobe University. Founded in 1840, the town was originally settled by sheep farmers, but it grew rapidly after gold was discovered in 1851. The Bendigo goldfield was one of the richest ever found, and although it is now largely exhausted there are still some mines in operation.
