Richmond, town in Tasmania, Australia. Richmond is a picturesque historical town lying north-east of Hobart on the Coal River and Pitt Water Harbour, and the centre of the fertile surrounding agricultural area. It was settled in 1825, after convict labour built what is now the oldest bridge in Australia (1823-1825), linking Richmond and Hobart to Port Arthur. Richmond was designated a municipality in 1861. The trade in agricultural produce, especially grain, was the town's mainstay, with local grain being among the first produced on the island and supporting the colony in the early 19th century. Today, Richmond is a holiday resort and tourist attraction, with well-preserved historical buildings including Australia's first Catholic church, the oldest jail in Australia (1825), and the Buscombe's General Store (1829). Population (1986) 693.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Richmond Information info
