Clarence, city, Tasmania, Australia. Clarence is opposite Hobart on the eastern shore of the River Derwent in south-eastern Tasmania. Although a city in its own right, the economy of Clarence is dominated by the industries and services of its larger neighbour, Hobart, and it has become primarily a dormitory city for the Tasmanian capital. There is some light industry. The River Derwent estuary is a busy port, and has the second-largest natural deep-water harbour in Australia.
