Port Pirie, city in South Australia. Port Pirie lies on the Spencer Gulf of the Indian Ocean, about 80 km (50 mi) south of Port Augusta. It has been a major port and industrial city since the turn of the century, processing and exporting lead ore from the extensive Broken Hill reserves of New South Wales, as well as zinc, rare oxides, and precious metals such as gold and silver. Port Pirie has chemical industries and is the outlet for grain from the agricultural area to the north of the city. The city was founded in the 1870s and designated a municipality in 1876.
