Adelaide, capital city of South Australia, Australia, situated on the River Torrens between Gulf St Vincent to the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east. The city is named after the queen consort of William lV. Adelaide had an estimated population of 1,088,400 in 1998.
Once known, somewhat condescendingly, as “the City of Churches”, Adelaide in the past 30 years has become celebrated for its arts festival, its alfresco lifestyle, and its manageable size and pace, all enhanced by a climate in which hot summers and warm autumns are separated by mild springs and winters. Adelaide's foothills suburbs are vulnerable to bushfires in the dry, windy summers: on February 16, 1983, for example, widespread fires killed 28 people and damage was estimated at over $200 million.
