Ipswich, city in Queensland, eastern Australia, on the Bremer River west of Brisbane. It is on the intersection of the routes to the Darling Downs and the upper Brisbane Valley. As well as being a centre of wool milling, cotton manufacturing, and limestone quarrying, Ipswich was previously the most important coal-mining area in Queensland; the last underground mine was closed in October 1997, leaving open-cut mining only. The surrounding area is also a rich agricultural region. Ipswich is the location of a new campus of the University of Queensland. The city was founded in 1829.
