Charleville, town, Queensland, north-eastern Australia. It is in the southern Queensland outback, adjacent to the Warrego River and on the junction of the Warrego and Mitchell highways, the latter being a segment of the inland route from Cairns to Sydney. Charleville is the main market and service centre for an extensive sheep-farming district, and an important base of the Flying Doctor Service. In 1922, Qantas (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service) began its first regular domestic air service, linking Charleville and Cloncurry. It is also a base for the School of Distance Education, which teaches children living on isolated properties.
