Queensland, Bundaberg - - Pictures

Bundaberg, city and seaport in Queensland, Australia. The port is on the mouth of the Burnett River in the heart of Queensland's central sugar belt, and is the location of the state's main bulk sugar terminal (storing up to 316,000 tonnes). The port exports sugar, which is milled and refined there, and timber. It is the headquarters of the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, which manufactures more than 85 per cent of Australia's dark rum, distilled from the abundant local sugar crops. Other industries include the manufacture of agricultural machinery and dairy farming. The Central Queensland University has a campus in Bundaberg. Herbert Hinkler, who made the first solo flight from England to Australia, was born in Bundaberg and his house has been converted into a museum. Bundaberg became a town in the 1880s and was designated a city in 1913; it is named after the local Bunda Aborigines. Population (1991) 38,074.
