Wagga Wagga, city in New South Wales, Australia. Wagga Wagga is located inland, west of Canberra and the Great Dividing Range, on the Murrumbidgee River. It is at the heart of the Riverina farm area and sheep-grazing region, and is the state's largest inland city. With its location on or near several major highways and railways (including the Sturt Highway from Sydney to Melbourne) it has become a commercial and processing centre for the region. Wagga Wagga's economy is based around agriculture and its factories include a wool-processing plant, a laminex plant, and an abattoir. Wagga Wagga is the seat of Charles Sturt University and a soil erosion research institute. Places of interest include the Historical Museum, the City Art Gallery, and the Aurora Pioneer Farm.
The city was settled in the 19th century and is also known just as Wagga, which is a word in the language of the local Wiradjuri Aborigines for "many crows". Population (1991) 40,875.
