Tamworth, city in New South Wales, Australia. Tamworth is inland in the north-east of the state, on the Peel River, and on the New England and Oxley highways. It is the main commercial, marketing, and processing centre of a fertile area of mixed agriculture, producing meat, grain, fruit, and tobacco. The city claims to be the capital of Australian country music, hosting the Australasian Country Music Awards and Festival each January which attracts thousands of visitors. The city is named after Tamworth, England, and was established in 1818, growing into a town by 1850, and designated a city in 1946. Places of interest include the Electricity Museum, Calala Cottage Museum, an art gallery, and a planetarium.
