Sydney has educational and cultural institutions commensurate in number and quality with its pre-eminent place in the nation: the University of Sydney (1850), Macquarie University (1964), the University of Technology, Sydney (1990; founded in 1965 as the New South Wales Institute of Technology), the University of New South Wales, and the University of Western Sydney (1989) spread over several campuses.
There are numerous museums and galleries. The Art Gallery of New South Wales (1887) is an elegant sandstone structure in the Domain. The gallery has probably the greatest art collection in the country and was extended in 1988 to mark the nation's bicentennial year. The Australian Museum is the country's largest natural history and ethnological collection, and includes a display of the evolution of Aboriginal culture over thousands of years.
