Sutherland, community in New South Wales, Australia, on Botany Bay, on the Georges and Hacking rivers and west of Sydney. It is centred on a coal-mining settlement and a road and rail junction. There is also an oil refinery. East of Sutherland is Cronulla, a major beach resort on Bate Bay, and the landing-place of Captain James Cook at Inscription Point on Botany Bay.
