Orange, town in New South Wales, Australia. It is 265 km (165 mi) west of Sydney, and is north-east of the extinct volcano Mount Canobolas. It is part of an agricultural region known for its fruit-growing. Orange began as a village in the 1820s and grew with the gold rush of the 1850s. The Australian poet A. B. "Banjo" Paterson was born nearby in 1864. Orange is now a regional market and service centre with fruit-processing, meat-packing, wool production, and some light industry.
