Lismore, city on the extreme northern coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated on Wilson's River and is 785 km (490 mi) north of Sydney. Lismore is the commercial and administrative capital of the state's northern coast. It first developed in the 1840s as a timber port, particularly for the export of cedar. There are still remnants of the "Big Scrub"rainforest on its outskirts. Today the region's principal industries include dairying and the production of sugar. Local industries include processing of local produce particularly tropical fruits, and there is some heavy industry such as engineering and steel-making. Population (1991) 27,250.
