Grafton, town and port, south-eastern Australia. Located in north-eastern New South Wales, Grafton is located 64 km (40 mi) from the mouth of the Clarence River and 480 km (300 mi) north of Sydney. The town is on both the Pacific Highway and the main railway line between the cities of Sydney and Brisbane, and is an important transport junction. Grafton is the centre of a farming area, primarily occupied with dairying, and also has sugar cane plantations. The streets of Grafton are lined with jacaranda trees, and each year the city holds a jacaranda festival while the trees are in bloom.
