Albury, city on the southern border of New South Wales, Australia. Albury is situated on the northern bank of the Murray River: Wodonga is a twin city on the opposite bank in Victoria. Albury-Wodonga was designated a regional urban growth centre in 1974 as part of a decentralization programme by the federal and state governments. The area is an important regional centre within a rural district based on dairy farming and other forms of agriculture that include the Rutherglen and Milawa wineries. Manufacturing is the most significant part of Albury's local economy followed by retailing and health services. Local firms' products include building materials, paper, textiles and clothing, and transport equipment. Population (1996 estimate) 42,080.
