Carnarvon, town on the western coast of Australia, on the Indian Ocean, in the state of Western Australia. Carnarvon is located on Shark Bay at the mouth of the Gascoyne, a seasonal river that often flows below ground. Traditionally a fishing town, noted particularly for prawns and scallops, Carnarvon is also the outlet for fruit, vegetables, and other farm produce of the surrounding Gascoyne District. About 75 percent of Western Australia's bananas come from this tropical area, which is irrigated using water from beneath the bed of the Gascoyne. Carnarvon is connected to the rest of Australia by the North West Coastal Highway and, to a lesser extent, by its airport. Palm trees and bougainvillea line Carnarvon's streets. Monkey Mia, nearby, is a popular resort where visitors can swim with dolphins. Population (1996) 6,357.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Carnarvon Information info
