Hamilton, town in southeastern Australia, in the southwestern corner of the state of Victoria. Hamilton lies on the Grange Burn River and is the main service and commercial center of the prosperous Western District. The town is a major wool processing center, and Hamilton's industries also process timber, dairy products, and other food. Hamilton sits at the junction of three major highways—the Henty, Glenelg, and Hamilton. The Hamilton Art Gallery has a large international collection, known for its English paintings and furniture. Grampians National Park, in the Grampian Mountains, is nearby. Population (1996) 9,248.
