Broadmeadows, city in southeastern Australia, in the state of Victoria, part of greater Melbourne. Broadmeadows is about 16 km (about 10 mi) northwest of Melbourne's central business district on the Hume Highway, the main highway between Melbourne and Sydney. Broadmeadows covers an area of 65 sq km (25 sq mi) and includes the suburbs of Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Dallas, Jacana, Gale Park, Pascoe Vale, and Tullamarine. In 1994 most of Broadmeadows became part of a much larger amalgamated city called Hume, covering 503 sq km (194 sq mi). Hume includes parts of the cities of Keilor, Broadmeadows, and Whittlesea, as well as the shire of Bulla. Broadmeadows' major industry is automobile manufacturing. The city is also home to Melbourne's international airport. Broadmeadows is one of Melbourne's poorest suburbs, with a high level of youth unemployment.
Before European settlement, the area was home to the Wuywurrung Aborigines. Broadmeadows became a shire in 1871 and was named for one of the earliest hotels in the district, which had been named after a town in Berwickshire, Scotland. Hume was named for the Welsh explorer Hamilton Hume, who, with British explorer William Hovell, set out in 1824 to find an overland route from Yass, in New South Wales, to Western Port Bay, in Victoria. Their journey took them along the route of the present-day Hume Highway. Broadmeadows was designated a city in 1956. Population (1991) 117,907.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Broadmeadows Information info
