Port Adelaide, port and city in southern Australia, in the state of South Australia, serving the city of Adelaide. Situated on the Gulf Saint Vincent, an arm of the Indian Ocean, Port Adelaide's sheltered natural harbor is the main container and passenger port of South Australia. Petroleum, grain, limestone, and other commodities pass through its docks, though much of the original port is now a maritime museum. The port was established in 1837 to serve Adelaide and the steamships traveling from England to the ports of eastern Australia. Port Adelaide was designated a town in the 1850s and a city in 1901. The Inner and deeper Outer harbors of Port Adelaide were busy and prosperous until the mid-20th century, when increased competition from the ports of Sydney and Melbourne caused their decline. Population (1991) 44,232.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Port Adelaide Information info
