Toowoomba, city in eastern Australia, in the state of Queensland. The city, lying in a hilly region more than 579 m (1900 ft) above sea level, is a popular summer resort, often described as the “Garden City of Queensland.” Toowoomba is also a railroad junction and commercial center, with an extensive trade in dairy products, wheat, fruits, timber, and coal. Among the chief manufactures are butter, cheese, beer, flour, and lumber. The University of Southern Queensland (1992) is located in Toowoomba. Population (1998 estimate) 87,000.
