Charleville, town in eastern Australia, in the southern outback of the state of Queensland. Situated on the Warrego River, Charleville serves the surrounding extensive sheep-farming district. It is also an important base for the Flying Doctor Service, which gives medical care to people in remote areas. The town is at the western end of the Warrego Highway (Brisbane is at the eastern end) and near the northern end of the Mitchell Highway, a segment of the inland route from Cairns to Sydney. Charleville is also served by an airport and a railway to Brisbane. In 1922 Qantas (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service) Airways, Ltd., began its first regular domestic service when it linked Charleville and Cloncurry.
