Bundaberg, city and port in eastern Australia, on the Pacific Ocean, in the state of Queensland. Bundaberg is located north of Brisbane near the mouth of the Burnett River, which empties at the northwest end of Hervey Bay. The port is used mainly to export sugar, which is milled and refined in Bundaberg, and timber. Bundaberg's other industries include distilling rum, shipbuilding, the manufacture of farm machinery, and dairy farming. Bundaberg is served by an airport, a railway, and an offshoot of the coastal Bruce Highway.
The house of Bert Hinkler, who was born in Bundaberg and became a famous solo pilot in the 1920s, was moved from Southampton, England, to Bundaberg. It is now an aviation museum. The southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef is off the coast of Bundaberg. A loggerhead turtle rookery, or nest, also lies nearby on the coast; the rookery is unusual because turtles generally prefer to lay their eggs on sandy islands offshore. Bundaberg became a town in the 1880s and was designated a city in 1913. It is named after the local Bunda Aborigines. Population (1998 estimate) 55,300.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Bundaberg Information info
