Waverley, city in southeastern Australia, in the state of New South Wales, part of greater Sydney. Waverley is located on the coast of the Tasman Sea about 7 km (about 4 mi) southeast of central Sydney. With an area of 9 sq km (3.5 sq mi), Waverley is bordered by Centennial Park to the west, the sea to the east, the suburbs of Bellevue Hill and Woollahra to the north, and the suburbs of Clovelly and Coogee to the south. Waverley's districts include Bondi, Bronte, Dover Heights, Queens Park, Charing Cross, and parts of Vaucluse and Rose Bay.
Waverley is mainly an older residential and retail center, but there are many restaurants and small hotels that attract people to visit and live in the suburb. Three beautiful beaches are a major feature of the area: Bondi Beach, world famous for its surfing, and the Bronte and Tamarama beaches. The city also hosts popular events such as the Festival of the Winds and the City to Surf foot race. Nearly 40 percent of Waverley's residents are immigrants, making the area one of metropolitan Sydney's most ethnically mixed and culturally interesting. Waverley is also one of Sydney's (and Australia's) most densely populated urban areas, with about 6600 residents per sq km (about 17,000 residents per sq mi). The city derives its name from Waverley House, built in Waverley by Barnett Levey in the period of 1798 to 1837 and named after the novels of Scottish novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott. Population (1991) 61,850.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Waverley Information info
