Tamworth, city in southeastern Australia, in the northeastern part of the state of New South Wales. Located on the Peel River in the Great Dividing Range, Tamworth is the main commercial, marketing, and processing center for a fertile farming area that produces meat, grain, fruit, and tobacco. The city also holds a country music festival each January that attracts thousands of visitors. An art gallery and a planetarium are also located in Tamworth. The New England and Oxley highways meet at Tamworth, and a railway and airport serve the city. The first settlers came to the area in the early 1830s, and Tamworth was named a town in 1836.
