Sutherland, community in southeastern Australia, in New South Wales State, on Botany Bay, on the Georges and Hacking rivers, near Sydney. The central village is a coal-mining settlement and a road and rail junction. Nearby are Cronulla, a major beach resort on Bate Bay, and the landing place of Captain James Cook at Inscription Point on Botany Bay. Population (1991) 184,399.
