Part of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Ku-ring-gai's main tourist attraction, lies within Ku-ring-gai; the rest of the park lies within Warringah Shire. The park has 100 km (60 mi) of shoreline and consists largely of a forested sandstone area on the southern banks of the Hawkesbury River. There is open rain forest, scrub, heath, and eucalyptus forest, which provide habitat for lyrebirds, swamp wallabies, koalas, and a wide variety of parrots and waterbirds. The park also has examples of Aboriginal art in its sandstone caves. The area was seriously affected by bushfires in 1994.
