Goulburn, city in southeastern New South Wales, Australia, on the state's southern plateau, 170 km (110 mi) southwest of Sydney and 80 km (50 mi) northeast of Canberra. Goulburn is located in a rich agricultural district and is an important transportation junction for railway and highway. Founded in 1828, the city was a main center for police forays against bushrangers, or outlaws, during gold rush days, and it has one of the state's largest jails.
