Pago Pago, formerly Pango Pango, village, capital of American Samoa, on Pago Pago Harbor, on the southeastern coast of Tutuila Island, in the Pacific Ocean. It is the distribution and tourist center of the island group and is served by a major port and an international airport. It became a United States naval and coaling station in 1878 and was under the control of the U.S. Navy until 1951. Pago Pago was made the capital of American Samoa in 1899.
