Wausau, city, seat of Marathon County, north central Wisconsin, at falls on the Wisconsin River, in a rich dairy-farming area; incorporated as a city 1872. Paper and paper products, lumber and other building materials, electrical motors, and construction machinery are manufactured. The city is the seat of the home office of a major insurance company and two junior colleges. Several museums and performing arts groups are active here. The city site, known to the Ojibwa people as Wausau (“far away place”), was settled by non-indigenous peoples in 1839 and grew rapidly as a lumbering center. It was called Big Bull Falls until 1872, when the Native American name was adopted.
