Racine, city, seat of Racine County, southeastern Wisconsin, a port on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Root River; incorporated as a city 1848. Agricultural equipment has been manufactured here since 1842. Other products include motor-vehicle parts, construction machinery, electrical equipment, wax products, and food items. The city has a historical museum, a fine arts museum, and a zoo. Much of its population is of Danish ancestry. The community was settled in 1834. Its growth was spurred by harbor improvements made in the mid-1840s and by the arrival of the railroad in 1855. The name Racine is probably derived from the French word for “root,” a reference to the profusion of roots on the river bank here. Population 85,725 (1980); 84,298 (1990); 81,095 (1998 estimate).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
