Janesville, city, seat of Rock County, southern Wisconsin, on the Rock River; settled 1830s, incorporated 1853. It is an agricultural and manufacturing hub with major industries including truck assembly, safety-related products, vegetable canning, and the manufacture of writing instruments, textiles, and furniture. A state school for the blind and a botanical garden are here. The city is named for Henry F. Janes, an early settler. Economic growth began in 1844 with the building of a dam on the Rock River. The railroad arrived in 1853, and by 1860 Janesville was one of the major cities of Wisconsin.
